A leading technology in the field of dentistry, implants are becoming more and more popular with many patients. Dental implants are used in place of a dental bridge, partial denture, or full denture and are very successful in helping to restore your smile!
Not only is an implant beneficial from an aesthetic point of view, but it is also medically beneficial for your overall oral health. When a tooth is lost, the bone begins to lose its density and can cause further issues. A dental implant replaces the root of the tooth you lost, and helps maintain the bone structure. Once the implant is placed, an artificial tooth is fitted to the implant to help create a complete smile and let you regain full use of your mouth for chewing!
A dental implant treatment is completed over the course of several appointments stretched out over several months. After an initial consultation and treatment plan, the first appointment will be to place the implant into the jaw bone. This will essentially be the new ‘roots’ of the tooth. The gum is then stitched closed to cover the implant and is given several months to heal. During this time, the implant will bond with the bone, thus creating a strong, artificial root system for the replacement tooth to be attached to.
During your second appointment, the dentist will place a post in the implant. This post will be the joining piece between the implant and the artificial tooth. After this appointment, a new, customized tooth will be created to fit with the specifications of your implant. This tooth will then be attached to the post. Once attached, you will have completed the implant process!
Follow-up appointments will most likely be necessary to continue to properly adjust your new tooth until you have regained full use of your tooth, and are completely comfortable with the fit!
